The five skandhas · the heaps
correspondences
nature
The five aggregates a person is analysed into: rūpa (form, the body), vedanā (feeling-tone — pleasant, unpleasant, neutral), saṃjñā (perception, recognition), saṃskāra (mental formations, habits, will), vijñāna (consciousness). Note the word: heaps. Not organs, not levels, not a hierarchy — piles of process, and the search for the one who owns them turns up another heap. Judaism counts five too, and the comparison is one of the most instructive on the bench: nefesh (the vital soul), ruach (the moral breath), neshamah (the divine soul), chayah, yechidah — the singular, indivisible you at the top. Five against five: one set ascends to a unique self that is finally, irreducibly yours, and the other flows around a centre where no such owner is found. Same number. Opposite conclusion.
