(1878–1951) — the artist who actually drew the most reproduced esoteric images in the world, and who was paid a flat fee for it and then very largely forgotten.

Born in London to American parents, raised partly in Jamaica, a theatre designer and illustrator, a member of the Golden Dawn in her own right, and a synaesthete who painted what she heard in music. The seventy-eight images she made for Waite in 1909 — the scenes on the minor arcana especially, which were her contribution to solve a problem of legibility — are the visual vocabulary through which most of the planet meets the tarot.

The deck is universally called Rider-Waite, after the publisher and the commissioner. This app calls it Rider-Waite-Smith, because she drew it.
