Johannes Reuchlin

Germany's great Hebraist: De Arte Cabalistica (1517) built the first systematic Latin Kabbalah — and when the campaign came to burn all Hebrew books, Reuchlin's public defense (against Pfefferkorn and the Cologne Dominicans) helped save them, at the cost of a heresy fight that previewed the Reformation.
