Nefesh · נפש — the vitalנפש

The lowest and the first — the soul every living thing has, the one that keeps the body running whether you attend to it or not.

The oldest layer is startlingly concrete. Leviticus 17:11 and Deuteronomy 12:23 say the blood IS the nefesh, and Bereshit Rabbah takes that literally when it lists the five names. Genesis 2:7 has God breathe into the clay and the human becomes a nefesh chayah — note the order: the breath is the gift, and nefesh is what the clay becomes once it has it.

In the sefirotic reading it sits at Malkhut, and in the Lurianic reading it comes from Assiyah, the world of making — the level that is fully in the world, fully in the body, and fully yours from birth.

Nothing in this tradition treats the vital soul as the low or embarrassing part. It is the one that is actually here.
