The Jews of Kaifeng · the honest silence
correspondences
nature
The one thread of real contact — and its honest silence. Jewish merchants on the Silk Road reached China by the Tang, and a community settled in Kaifeng by the Song dynasty: a synagogue built in 1163, stone stelae recording their faith in Chinese, families who kept Torah for seven centuries deep inside the Confucian and Taoist world. And yet: no trace survives of any exchange between their Judaism and the Tao around them, and Kabbalah proper — the Zohar, the Ari — flowered in Spain and Safed after Kaifeng was already cut off from the Jewish mainstream. So this door claims no borrowing in either direction, because there is none to claim. The resemblances that follow are convergence, pure — which makes them, if anything, more startling: two peoples who never compared notes, reaching for the same nameless source.
