Tefillin — the object that is already a diagram

Two small black leather boxes with straps, containing scrolls, bound to the upper arm and the head on weekday mornings. That is the whole of the object, and it has been made to roughly the same specification for something over two thousand years — the oldest examples we have were in caves near the Dead Sea before the Second Temple fell.

This room exists because the thing is a diagram before anybody interprets it. Four compartments above and one below. A letter pressed into the leather on both sides of the head-box, with a different number of heads on each side. Two knots that are themselves letters, so that a divine Name is spelled across three separate pieces of hide, none of which has it written on. Seven turns of a strap down a forearm and three around a finger. None of that is symbolism laid on afterwards. It is the construction specification, argued out in a law court.

⚠ And the frame this app insists on, first, before anything else: this is a mitzvah. A commandment, in the plainest sense — four passages of Torah say bind these words, and the tradition binds them. It is done by ordinary people, on ordinary mornings, in a few minutes, mostly without thinking about emanation at all. Everything mystical said below is a LAYER, and is marked as one. Nothing in this room is being offered to you as a technique, and nothing here is a "cosmic tool" — an app that criticises the Golden Dawn for repurposing other people's ritual furniture does not get to do it on the next page.
