777 (Crowley, 1909)
correspondences
nature
A book that is almost entirely tables. Thirty-two rows — ten sephirot and twenty-two paths — cross-indexed against Hebrew letters, tarot trumps, planets, elements, the four colour scales, Egyptian, Greek, Hindu and Scandinavian deities, animals, plants, precious stones, perfumes, drugs and magical weapons.
It is the industrialisation of Lévi's single idea, and it is the reference object twentieth-century occultism actually runs on: to a very large extent, "doing Qabalah" in English has meant performing a lookup in 777.
Set it beside the Sefer Yetzirah's twenty-two letters and the difference in kind is the whole argument of this wing. One is a language people prayed in. The other is an index.
