Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie (Lévi, 1855)
correspondences
nature
The book in which Éliphas Lévi welded the twenty-two tarot trumps to the twenty-two Hebrew letters — published 1854–56, and the origin point of nearly everything the modern West calls occultism.
It also introduced the Baphomet image, the doctrine of the astral light, and above all a method: grand analogical correspondence-making across every tradition at once, held together by number. The Golden Dawn did not invent that method. It inherited it here and scaled it up.
Waite, who disliked a good deal about Lévi, nonetheless translated him — and then built the deck that carried his idea to the world.
