תפילין the box
תפילין tefillin — two small black boxes with straps, and the object is a diagram before anybody interprets it. FIVE MODELS. ⊞ THE BOX: four compartments above and one below (the head takes things apart and the heart does not) — explode it, read each of the four passages, and TURN IT TO FIND THE ASYMMETRY: an ordinary three-headed shin on the right side, and on the left a shin with FOUR heads that exists nowhere else in Hebrew writing. ⭐ Both are required, and the scribes' reason reaches into the room next door — three heads is the letter as WRITTEN, ink added; four heads is the letter as it stood on the tablets, which were not written but CUT, material taken away. Two ways a letter can come to exist, on two faces of one box. Plus the order dispute: Rashi against his own grandson Rabbenu Tam, invisible from outside, uncheckable without destroying the box — and ⚠ the popular claim that archaeology settled it at Qumran is NOT supported; the finds show fluidity, not the medieval two. ☉ THE PLACEMENT: lower the arm and watch the box arrive OPPOSITE THE HEART, which is the actual specification; then flip the handedness, because the rule is the WEAK arm (Menachot 36b–37a reads yadcha as yad kehah) so a left-handed person wears it on the right. And the head-box sits at the HAIRLINE on top of the skull, not on the forehead. ⟳ THE WRAPPING: scrub the donning — seven turns down the forearm, three at the finger, wound TOWARD the body (Ashkenazi) or AWAY from it (Sephardi and Hasidic), same ten turns, opposite spiral, not adjudicated. ⭐ And the last three turns are a wedding: Hosea 2:21–22 contains 'I will betroth you to me' THREE TIMES, one per turn — you put it on as a ring, and you are on the receiving end of the vow. שדי THE NAME: shin on the box, dalet in the head-knot, yod in the arm-knot — a Name spelled across three separate pieces of leather, two of which are KNOTS, and completed only by being worn. Ↄ THE LAYERS: four kinds of literature with four dates raised over one object — Torah says only 'bind' and describes nothing; the Talmud specifies the object, as law; the Zohar reads it sefirotically; Chabad in 1797 gives the version most people have heard. ⚠⚠ AND A CORRECTION THIS APP OWES ON ITS OWN ACCOUNT: the tidy reading is three above and seven below, and the object does not say it — count the compartments, there are four. The three-and-seven is in the STRAP (seven on the forearm, three at the finger) and the sefirotic reading of head-against-arm is 1797. The box says four-and-one. A mitzvah, framed as one — not a cosmic tool.
