THE ATLAS OF THE UNPAINTABLE

Marc Chagall

Chagall
nature
Vitebsk, Paris, the Bible windows, the flying lovers and the fiddler on the roof. Hasidic imagery carried into the School of Paris and then into stained glass across Europe and Israel.

The counter-example this wing needs so it does not become a wing about abstraction only: a painter who kept the FIGURE, kept the folk imagery, and carried the tradition into modernism without deciding that the image had to go. Not everyone solved the second-commandment problem by abolishing likeness.
