THE ATLAS OF THE UNPAINTABLE
Melencolia I (1514)
Melencolia I
nature
A winged figure sits among instruments and will not use them. Above her, a 4×4 magic square whose rows, columns and diagonals all total 34 — the square of Jupiter, prescribed by Agrippa as a talisman against exactly this affliction.
The most famous piece of occult arithmetic in European art, hidden in plain sight in the most reproduced print of the Renaissance. And the bottom row reads 15–14: the year. The engraver signed it inside a magic square.
