THE ATLAS OF THE UNPAINTABLE

How do you paint nothing?

painting the Ein Sof
nature
The Ein Sof is without end, without image, without name. Any mark you make is already less than it. The only honest picture of the infinite is an empty surface — and an empty surface is not a picture.

Every artist in this wing runs into this wall, and their solutions ARE the wing: leave the field empty and mark its edge (Newman), fill it with one colour and let it breathe (Rothko), paint a black square and hang it in the icon corner (Malevich), or take dictation and refuse authorship altogether (Houghton, af Klint).

whyKeter is the crown you cannot look at. Painters keep trying anyway, which is the subject of this wing.
