Filmmaker, painter, record collector, occultist. Compiled the Anthology of American Folk Music (1952), animated Heaven and Earth Magic, painted from Kabbalah and alchemy, and claimed Aleister Crowley was his father.

Smith organised the Anthology by the four classical elements — fire, water, air, earth, colour-coded — an alchemical scheme imposed on hillbilly 78s, which then reorganised American music. The occult diagram did not stay in the diagram; it went out and changed the radio.
