THE ATLAS OF THE UNPAINTABLE

Georgiana Houghton

Houghton
nature
A London spiritualist who exhibited 155 watercolours of pure non-objective form at the New British Gallery on Bond Street in 1871, and said the spirits drew them. She paid for the show herself and it ruined her.

⭐⭐⭐ FORTY YEARS BEFORE KANDINSKY. Her late drawings have no subject at all — coils and veils of colour that would not look out of place in 1960. Current scholarship names the reason she is missing from the story plainly: gender bias in the writing of modern art history. Her grave was lost for decades and only found again at Highgate in July 2023.
