THE ATLAS OF THE UNPAINTABLE

Anselm Kiefer

Kiefer
nature
German painter and sculptor working in lead, ash, straw and burnt books. Titles taken directly from the Lurianic vocabulary: Sefiroth, Shevirat Ha-Kelim, Merkaba, Lilith, Zim Zum.

⭐⭐ THE ONE ARTIST IN THIS WING WHERE NOBODY HAS TO ARGUE. He reads Scholem, he says so, and he names the paintings after the doctrine. And the choice is not decorative: a German born in 1945, using a Jewish theory of catastrophe and repair to talk about German history, is making an argument you can dislike but cannot call vague.
