THE ATLAS OF THE UNPAINTABLE

Piet Mondrian

Mondrian
nature
Joined the Theosophical Society in 1909 and stayed a member for the rest of his life. The grids are the end of a road that began with theosophical diagrams of ascent.

The horizontal and the vertical, held apart and never allowed to become a picture of anything — this is the second-commandment solution arrived at by a Dutch Calvinist through Blavatsky. The mature work looks like the most secular painting ever made and is the most doctrinal.
