THE ATLAS OF THE UNPAINTABLE

Salon de la Rose + Croix (1892–1897)

Rose + Croix
nature
Six salons in Paris staged by Joséphin Péladan, self-styled Sâr of the Mystic Order of the Rose + Croix. Around 230 artists showed: Khnopff, Hodler, Toorop, Delville, Schwabe, Filiger. Erik Satie wrote the fanfares.

The moment esotericism had a gallery programme, a doorman and a dress code. ⚠ And the honest detail: Moreau and Redon, the two Symbolists everybody assumes were in it, refused — they wanted nothing to do with Péladan's doctrine. Not everyone in the room believed the room.
