THE ATLAS OF THE UNPAINTABLE

"The Sublime is Now" (1948)

The Sublime is Now
nature
A short essay in Tiger's Eye. Europe, Newman says, spent centuries trying to make the sublime out of beauty and failed. American painters can have it now, without cathedrals, legends or myth — out of nothing.

⭐⭐ IT IS A CREATION-FROM-NOTHING ARGUMENT MADE ABOUT PAINTING, in the same year as Onement I. Read beside tzimtzum it is uncanny; read on its own it is an American declaring independence from European art history. Both readings are available and the essay is two pages, so you can decide yourself.
We are freeing ourselves of the impediments of memory, association, nostalgia, legend, myth.
