THE ATLAS OF THE UNPAINTABLE
The Tree of Life (2011)
The Tree of Life
nature
Terrence Malick's film opens on a line from Job — "Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?" — and then shows you the foundations being laid, for twenty minutes, before returning to a family in 1950s Texas.
⚠ IT IS NOT A KABBALISTIC FILM AND THIS NODE SAYS SO. Malick's frame is Christian and philosophical — Heidegger, Augustine, Job. It is here because it does the thing this wing is about: it answers a theological question with IMAGES rather than argument, and stakes everything on whether looking at creation can do the work that an explanation cannot.

whyThe film calls it "the way of grace" and sets it against "the way of nature". That is Chesed and Gevurah, in a Texas back garden.
