THE ATLAS OF THE UNPAINTABLE

Tzimtzum as a compositional device

the withdrawal, on canvas
nature
Luria: for a world to exist, the infinite light withdrew from a point, leaving a vacated space with a residue in it. On a canvas: for a form to exist, the field must be interrupted. The zip, the fold, the seam, the cut.

The single most productive borrowing in this wing, and one of the few an artist wrote down in his own hand. Newman's note: "Out of ZimZum was the world created." Whether he was doing theology or telling jokes is the argument this wing hosts rather than settles.

Tehiru is a walk-in model of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life and its kindred ways — built to be explored, not read. This page is a still frame of one node; the app is where it moves.
