A recognisable late-twentieth-century phenomenon: a strikingly large share of the American teachers who brought vipassanā and Tibetan practice west were Jewish — Kornfield, Goldstein, Salzberg, Boorstein, Ram Dass — many of whom later described going east partly because nobody had shown them the mystical wing at home.
