karma
nature
Not fate and not a ledger kept by anyone: intentional action conditions what follows, the way a habit shapes the hand that made it. Buddhism's innovation on the older Indian idea was to locate karma in intention rather than in the ritual correctness of the act.
The mechanism the wheel actually runs on, and one of the few places both traditions agree that deeds are load-bearing.
