THE ATLAS OF THE EMPTY THRONE

Śāntideva

Śāntideva
nature
A monk at Nālandā whom his brothers thought did nothing but eat and sleep, until they invited him to teach as a joke and he recited the Bodhicaryāvatāra from the seat. Its argument is a strange, sharp piece of logic: if suffering is bad, it is bad wherever it occurs, and the boundary marked "me" gives it no special weight.

The great manual of the bodhisattva vow, and the closest thing on this bench to tikkun olam reached from an opposite metaphysics.
All the joy the world contains has come through wishing happiness for others.

whyChesed is unbounded giving — and here the boundary being dissolved is not generosity's limit but the self that was supposed to be doing the giving.
