THE ATLAS OF THE CAVE AND THE SUN

The order the eyes must take

the eyes' order
nature
Coming up, he cannot look at anything bright at once. Plato gives the sequence: shadows first, then reflections in water, then the things themselves, then the night sky and the moon and the stars — and only last the sun, and even then not its image in water but the sun itself, in its own place.

Ascent has an order, and skipping it damages you. This is the pardes warning in Greek: four went up, and of the four, one died, one went mad, one cut the shoots, and only Rabbi Akiva entered in peace and came out in peace. Both traditions say the same thing — the light is not the danger, the rate is.
