THE ATLAS OF THE CAVE AND THE SUN

Periagōgē · the turning of the whole soul

the turning
nature
Plato's definition of education, and it is not what the schools do: the capacity to know is already there, and already good, and it is pointed the wrong way. Teaching is not putting sight into blind eyes. It is turning the whole person — not the eye alone — until what was always able to see is facing the right direction.

The hinge of the walk, and the deepest single rhyme in this pack. The Hebrew for turning is teshuvah. Both traditions say the decisive move is a turn rather than an acquisition. Then they part on what you turn toward: Plato turns the soul toward being, and teshuvah turns you toward a person you have wronged, this week, with something owed.
The instrument of knowledge can only by the movement of the whole soul be turned from the world of becoming into that of being. — 518c, tr. Jowett

Tehiru is a walk-in model of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life and its kindred ways — built to be explored, not read. This page is a still frame of one node; the app is where it moves.
