THE ATLAS OF THE ALIEN SPARK
Carpocrates
Carpocrates
nature
An Alexandrian teacher whose followers were accused by Irenaeus and Clement of ritual licence — the charge that the soul must pass through every experience to be free of the world's debts. Almost nothing survives from their own hand.
The load-bearing example of a problem that runs through the whole corpus: the libertine Gnostic exists almost entirely in the accusations of enemies, and the fifty-two recovered texts of Nag Hammadi are overwhelmingly ascetic. Worth knowing the charge existed; not worth believing it uncritically.
