Bishop of Lyon, and the author of Against Heresies — five books setting out the Valentinian system in enormous detail in order to demolish it. He is hostile, occasionally sarcastic, and by the standards of ancient polemic remarkably accurate: where Nag Hammadi lets us check him, he is often right.

For eighteen centuries he WAS the evidence. Every account of the thirty aeons, every syzygy, the whole architecture the atlas renders — Irenaeus preserved it while trying to destroy it.

They tell us that error was not sent forth as such, but was born with a mind of its own.
