THE ATLAS OF THE ALIEN SPARK

Hans Jonas

Jonas
nature
Heidegger's student and Hannah Arendt's lifelong friend, who wrote the book that made Gnosticism legible to the twentieth century. His move was to stop cataloguing systems and ask what it FEELS like to hold one: a self that does not belong here, thrown into a world it did not make, homesick for a place it cannot remember.

He named the two ideas this wing turns on — the alien God and thrownness — and then argued that modern nihilism is a Gnosticism that lost its God and kept the alienation. That argument is why the material still lands.
The universe is not the well-ordered whole in which the ancients felt at home; it is a vast prison whose innermost dungeon is the earth.
