THE ATLAS OF THE ALIEN SPARK
The Hymn of the Pearl
Hymn of the Pearl
nature
A prince is sent from the East to fetch a pearl from Egypt, takes off his radiant robe, puts on the clothing of the country, eats their food, and forgets — the errand, his origin, himself. A letter arrives, rises up as a voice, and says: Awake, and rise from your sleep; remember that you are a son of kings. He remembers, takes the pearl, and his robe comes down the road to meet him.
The whole mood in one fairy tale, portable by anyone. And every element of teshuvah is in it — exile, forgetting, the call from outside, the turning, the garment restored — arriving in Syriac, from outside Judaism, around 225.
And I saw it in all of myself, and I saw myself in all of it, that we were two in distinction and yet again one in one likeness.
