THE ATLAS OF THE MOVEMENT THAT MOVED THE ADDRESS
⚠ קוצק · Kotzk — twenty years behind a closed door
Kotzk
nature
Menachem Mendel of Kotzk (1787–1859) demanded absolute inward truth and had contempt for anything performed. In 1839, after an incident nobody has satisfactorily explained, he withdrew into a room and stayed there for the last twenty years of his life, seeing almost no one.
⭐⭐⭐ The counter-Hasidism inside Hasidism. Where the movement offered joy, warmth and a crowd around a table, Kotzk offered severity, solitude and the accusation that most religious life is theatre. He is credited with where is God? wherever you let Him in, and with telling students that he was not there to draw heaven down but to make them ask.
⚠ The withdrawal is the wing's open wound and this app will not pretend to explain it. ⭐ And what came out of Kotzk is remarkable: Ger, the largest court in Poland, was founded by his student — the movement's most demanding teacher produced its most stable institution.
