THE ATLAS OF THE MOVEMENT THAT MOVED THE ADDRESS

Neo-Hasidism — the material without the court

neo-Hasidism
nature
The twentieth-century movement to take Hasidic teaching, music and practice into settings that are not Hasidic communities — Hillel Zeitlin in Warsaw, then Shlomo Carlebach and Zalman Schachter-Shalomi in America, then Jewish Renewal, and by now a very large part of what non-Orthodox Jews mean by spirituality.

⚠⚠ The honest question, and the wing states it rather than settling it: can the material be separated from the community that produced it? Hasidism's own doctrines say no — the sparks are raised in this life, under this discipline, in this court. Neo-Hasidism's answer is that a teaching which claims God is in everything can hardly claim to be reachable only from one address. ⚠ Carlebach's legacy is additionally and seriously contested on grounds of his conduct, and this app does not file that as a footnote to his music.
