ל"ו נסתרים · The thirty-six hidden righteous

the nistarim
nature
The Talmud (Sanhedrin 97b, also Sukkah 45b): in every generation there are no fewer than thirty-six righteous people who merit receiving the Divine Presence. They do nothing to be known — the same source adds the corollary that whoever names himself as one of them thereby proves he is not. The later Hasidic tradition places the young Baal Shem Tov among a fellowship of exactly this kind before he ever taught in public: men and women doing ordinary, unglamorous work — a melamed's assistant, a water-carrier, a gatherer of tar from tree roots — with nothing about the work itself to mark who was doing it.

⭐⭐ Concealment here is not the absence of holiness — it is a description of where Malchut, Kingship, actually lives. The Shekhinah does not blaze; it dwells, and it dwells in whatever ordinary thing is closest to hand, a tar-gatherer's smoke-stained fingers turning the pages of a Gemara rather than a lit room announcing itself. The rule that self-naming disqualifies is not a technicality — it is the whole doctrine in one clause: the moment concealment is used for credit, it has already stopped being what it was. ⚠ The specific forest-hut, tar-gathering texture of the Besht's own formation among the nistarim is traced by this app to a later 20th-century collection (Chitrik), not to the earliest hagiography — see the sources scene in ✧ the hidden tzaddikim room for the full tiering.

whyMalkhut is Kingship — classically identified with the Shekhinah, the Presence that dwells rather than blazes, clothed here in the most ordinary hands rather than announced in glory.
