THE ATLAS OF THE MOVEMENT THAT MOVED THE ADDRESS

הצדיק · The tzaddik — a channel, and then an office

the tzaddik
nature
The Hasidic leader is not primarily a scholar or a judge. He is a channel: attached above and attached to his people, drawing sustenance, healing and forgiveness down through himself. A follower travels to him, gives him a kvitl — a written petition — and is bound to him.

⚠⚠ The doctrine that made the movement work and the institution that made it vulnerable, and they are the same thing. A channel cannot be argued with the way a ruling can. ⭐ And the office became hereditary within two generations, which no early source requires — the theory is about a person's attainment and the practice became about their father. Breslov's refusal to appoint a successor is the clearest internal criticism of this anywhere in the movement, and it comes from inside.

whyYesod is the channel itself — the rung that conducts, and whose whole function is to be a conduit rather than a source.
