Casaubon dates the corpus

In a book aimed at a Catholic history of the Church, Isaac Casaubon shows on linguistic grounds that the Hermetica are Greek writings of the common era, not Egyptian writings older than Moses.

The spell breaks. The prestige had rested entirely on the date, and the date was wrong — so the tradition's standing collapsed and its actual interest had to be re-earned, which it was. This app treats that as the model outcome, not a tragedy.
