THE ATLAS OF THE EMERALD TABLET
Lactantius
Lactantius
nature
A Christian rhetorician, tutor to Constantine's son, who quoted Hermes approvingly as a pagan sage who had somehow foreseen Christian truth — and thereby made it respectable for Christians to read the Hermetica for the next thirteen centuries.
The permission slip. Ficino could translate these books for a Medici because a Church Father had already vouched for them, and that chain of vouching is why the tradition survived at all in the Latin West.
