In CH XIII the pupil asks to be reborn and is told he cannot be taught it, only undergo it: twelve tormentors are driven out by ten powers, and when they are gone the pupil says he no longer sees with the eyes of the body.

A transformation that has to be done to you, with a numbered sequence and a hymn at the end. The Kabbalah's nearest neighbours — bittul, the raising of sparks, the practice of hitbodedut — all keep a self who does the work. This one asks for it to be dissolved and remade.
