THE ATLAS OF THE INMOST SELF
The Bhagavad Gītā
the Gītā
nature
Seven hundred verses set in the worst possible place for a philosophy lecture: between two armies, with a man who has just seen his cousins and teachers on the other side and put down his bow. The answer he gets is not that the fight does not matter but that action itself must be reconsidered — do what is yours to do, without owning the fruit of it.
A tradition's central ethical text is a conversation about a duty you do not want, and the resolution is neither escape nor indifference. Jewish thought has the same shape and a different accent: the mitzvah is done because it is commanded, and the reward is not the point.
Let your concern be with action alone, and never with the fruits of action.
