CARL JUNG AND THE KABBALAH
1934: "The Aryan Unconscious"
the 1934 controversy
nature
In 1934, as president of a psychotherapy society being reorganized under Nazi patronage, Jung wrote in the Zentralblatt für Psychotherapie that "the Aryan unconscious has a higher potential than the Jewish" — while elsewhere in the same period praising Jewish psychological insight as more differentiated than the "Aryan," a contradiction historians have never fully resolved.
⭐⭐⭐ THIS GOES IN FIRST, NOT LAST, BECAUSE FLATTERING A READER WITH ONLY THE 1944 VISION WOULD BE A KIND OF CONTEMPT. Jung was never a Nazi party member and later called the episode a serious error; Gershom Scholem, who had every reason not to, went on lecturing at the same Eranos podium Jung had built, starting in 1949 and continuing for years. ⚠⚠ Drob's hypothesis — offered as a hypothesis, not a verdict — is that Jung's choice to build his mature psychology on alchemy rather than on the Kabbalah he had ready access to was itself shaped by a wish to keep distance from Jewish sources during exactly this period, and that the 1944 vision reads as an unconscious return of what had been pushed away. ⚠ The app states the documented facts, names the disagreement among historians about how to weigh them, and does not resolve it for the reader.
