CARL JUNG AND THE KABBALAH

Henry Corbin

Corbin
nature
A French philosopher and scholar of Islamic mysticism, translator of Ibn ʿArabi and Suhrawardi, who coined the term mundus imaginalis — "the imaginal" — for a real intermediate world of image-in-itself, neither physical fact nor private fantasy. He lectured at Eranos alongside Jung for decades, and later alongside Scholem too.

⭐⭐ THE THIRD MAN AT THE SAME PODIUM, ARRIVING AT A CLOSE COUSIN OF ACTIVE IMAGINATION FROM ۞ SUFISM RATHER THAN FROM PSYCHOANALYSIS. Corbin insisted the imaginal is a real ontological order, not a psychological metaphor for one — a stronger claim than Jung usually made about active imagination's visions, and a useful pressure on this wing's own caution about the 1944 vision: Corbin would have asked why an experienced reality needs psychologizing away at all.
