CARL JUNG AND THE KABBALAH

The Break With Freud

the break, 1913
nature
In 1913, after six years as Freud's chosen successor, Jung broke with him — over theory (Jung would not reduce religion and myth to sublimated sexuality) and over authority (Freud expected the break to end Jung's career; it did the opposite). What followed was a period Jung himself called a "confrontation with the unconscious."

⭐ THE HINGE EVERYTHING ELSE IN THIS WING HANGS FROM. Without this rupture there is no Black Books, no Red Book, no active imagination, and — much later and much less directly — no 1944 vision. Jung spent the next six years with no institutional position, no movement of his own yet, and what he later described as a controlled encounter with material that could as easily have been called a breakdown.
