CARL JUNG AND THE KABBALAH

Marie-Louise von Franz

von Franz
nature
A Swiss classicist who met Jung in 1933 at eighteen — a meeting she called the decisive encounter of her life — and translated alchemical manuscripts to pay for her own analysis before becoming, by her own account and his, his closest collaborator for the last third of his life. She interpreted an estimated 65,000 dreams over her career and co-founded the C.G. Jung Institute in Zürich in 1948.

⭐⭐⭐ THE DISCIPLE WHO TOOK OVER THE UNFINISHED SHELVES. Where Jung sketched, von Franz built out in full: fairy tales as a second Red Book’s worth of unconscious material, alchemy carried on past Mysterium Coniunctionis, and — with the physicist Jung had already been corresponding with about synchronicity — a serious attempt (Number and Time, 1974) to root the acausal connecting principle in the psychology of number itself, rather than leaving it a suggestive essay. She never married, and described her own life’s work as given wholly to his.

whyBinah is structure built from what is given — von Franz took Jung’s late, half-finished material and gave it the sustained scholarly architecture his own last years did not have time for.
