MASACH — THE SCREEN AND THE UPPER NINE
Aviut — The Five Degrees of Desire
aviut
nature
The measured "thickness" of a desire to receive, graded in five degrees from shoresh (root, the faintest trace of a wish) through aleph, bet, gimel, to dalet — the coarsest, most self-directed desire, and the one Malkhut carries by nature. The degree of aviut in a given desire determines what STRENGTH of masach is needed to receive through it lishma; a coarser desire needs a stronger, more deliberate restriction before it can be safely used to receive for the sake of giving rather than for itself.
⭐⭐ WHY THE LADDER HAS RUNGS AT ALL, RATHER THAN BEING ONE STEP. If every desire needed the same fixed amount of restriction, there would be one masach, not a graded instrument usable differently at every level — aviut is the reason the ascent through the upper nine is a genuine climb with distinct rungs rather than a single threshold crossed once.

whyMalkhut is where the coarsest, dalet-level desire natively sits — the vessel the whole ladder above it exists to lift material out of, not around.
