MASACH — THE SCREEN AND THE UPPER NINE
Lishma — For Her Sake
lishma
nature
The intention that a masach exists to make possible: receiving in order to give pleasure to the Giver, rather than lo lishma, receiving for one's own sake alone — the vessel's unaltered, default condition. Ashlag treats lishma not as a pious feeling but as a specific, acquirable technical state: the ONLY intention a masach can actually operate under, so that "attaining the upper nine" and "acquiring the capacity to receive lishma, level by level" are, on this system, literally the same project stated twice.
⭐⭐⭐ THE DIRECT ANSWER TO "WHAT MUST ONE DO." Not asceticism, and not simply refusing to receive — Ashlag is explicit that pure refusal leaves a person exactly where Malkhut already is, empty-handed. The instruction is to receive, deliberately, WITH a masach, FOR the purpose of bestowal — which is why this wing's own bespoke room builds the mechanic as a live choice between two intentions rather than a single climb button.

whyChesed is bestowal itself, unearned giving — lishma is the intention of Chesed applied to the act of receiving, which is exactly the paradox Ashlag says the masach resolves.
