On this system, the nine sephirot above Malkhut — Keter through Yesod — are not nine additional CREATED things a person must separately build or earn; they are the structure of the light itself, existing already, prior to and independent of any created being. Malkhut alone is the created "will to receive" — the one thing that did not exist within the Giver, and the only place a created being actually starts. "Attaining the upper nine," on this reading, is not adding nine new possessions to a bare Malkhut. It is Malkhut itself acquiring, rung by rung, a masach fit to receive AS the light coming down through each of those nine already-existing structures, rather than remaining sealed off from all of them in its own native, unaltered desire.
