THE SOUND OF THE UNSAYABLE

Shlomo Carlebach

Carlebach
nature
The rabbi and songwriter who put Hasidic melody on a guitar and sent it into the American 1960s, writing hundreds of tunes now sung in synagogues that have no idea whose they are.

The single most-sung Jewish composer of the last century, and the app is not going to hand you a clean legend. ⚠⚠ THE STRONGEST OBJECTION, STATED PLAINLY AND FIRST: after his death, multiple women publicly accused him of sexual misconduct, reported at length in Lilith magazine in 1998 and revisited repeatedly since; many communities now sing the melodies while naming the allegations, and some have stopped singing them. This app does not settle that, and it does not omit it either — the same rule the ▨ wing applies to a disputed reading, applied to a person. What is not in dispute is the musical fact: he took a court repertoire that lived at a table and made it portable.
