THE SOUND OF THE UNSAYABLE

Qawwali

qawwali
nature
The devotional music of the Chishti Sufi orders of South Asia — a lead voice, a chorus, harmonium and clapping, built to carry a gathering toward ḥāl, a state, over an hour or more.

⭐⭐ THE STRUCTURAL COUSIN OF THE NIGGUN, ARRIVED AT INDEPENDENTLY, AND THE MECHANICS ARE STRIKINGLY PARALLEL WITHOUT BEING RELATED. A short phrase repeated past the point of interest; a group rather than a soloist; no fixed ending, the length set by the room; and a stated doctrinal purpose rather than an aesthetic one. ⚠ It is not a version of anything Jewish and this app makes no ranking of traditions — the reason it is here is that two traditions that never consulted each other both concluded that repetition without semantic content is the way past the narrating self. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is where a listener should start.
