THE SOUND OF THE UNSAYABLE

Rick Rubin

Rubin
nature
The producer behind Def Jam's founding sessions (LL Cool J, Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys), the Def American/American Recordings years (Slayer, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, System of a Down), and Johnny Cash's late American Recordings — then, in 2023, a book called The Creative Act: A Way of Being and a podcast called Tetragrammaton, after the unpronounceable four-letter Name.

⭐⭐ FILED HERE UNDER THE SAME RULE AS BLOCH AND COHEN, NOT UNDER MU-BORROWED'S EXCEPTION. Rubin was raised Jewish in Long Beach, New York, and by his own account practices Buddhist meditation, not Kabbalah specifically — this app has found no interview where he names the doctrine. What is documented: he told NPR creative work is "a devotional act," that he has "a knowingness that there is a power greater than us that seems to animate everything," and that he spent eight years on a book NPR calls "basically a spiritual text." ⚠ And he named his current show for the Name that is not said aloud, which is either a considered choice or a borrowed one — the objection node's question, asked of a man whose whole method is famously to say almost nothing and let the artist arrive at it themselves. His own vocabulary is closer to Zen than to Zohar; the resemblance the app is noting is structural, not a claim about his practice.
I have a knowingness that there is a power greater than us that seems to animate everything.

whyYesod is the channel rather than the source — and "get out of the way and let it come through" is Rubin's own description of his job in the room.
