THE SOUND OF THE UNSAYABLE

The Shofar

the shofar
nature
A ram's horn, blown in a fixed sequence — tekiah, shevarim, teruah, tekiah gedolah — on the New Year. The oldest instrument still in liturgical use in Judaism, and the only one that survived the Temple.

⭐⭐ THE TRADITION'S FIRST AND MOST LITERAL ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM ABOVE: A VOICE WITH NO WORDS IN IT. The rabbis called the broken blasts a groaning and a sobbing; the Kabbalists read the sequence as an unbroken sound that shatters and reassembles, which is a small diagram of the vessels breaking and being gathered. ⚠ The honest part: the shofar is Torah law, not Kabbalah — the Kabbalists inherited it and read it, they did not invent it. That order matters everywhere in this wing.

sephirahbinah
whyBinah, from which the New Year's judgement is traditionally drawn — and the shofar's cry is aimed at it.
