THE SOUND OF THE UNSAYABLE

John Zorn & Radical Jewish Culture

Radical Jewish Culture
nature
The composer's Masada project and the label Tzadik's Radical Jewish Culture series — hundreds of pieces written in a self-imposed scale system, played by free-jazz and hardcore musicians.

⭐⭐ THE MOST DELIBERATE ANSWER ANY MUSICIAN HAS GIVEN TO "WHAT WOULD A JEWISH MUSIC BE THAT IS NOT NOSTALGIA", AND HE GAVE IT AS A CONSTRAINT RATHER THAN A STYLE. Zorn set himself rules — a limited scale, short heads, an open middle — and wrote hundreds of tunes inside them, which is much closer to how a tradition actually generates repertoire than any attempt to sound old. ⚠ He is explicit in the interviews below that this is a question he is asking rather than a heritage he is transmitting, and the app takes him at his word rather than promoting him into a lineage he declines.
