THE ATLAS OF THE ONE AND THE MANY

Justinian closes the Academy

529 CE
nature
An imperial edict ends the teaching of pagan philosophy at Athens. Damascius and six colleagues travel to the court of Khosrow I in Persia, find it not to their taste, and negotiate a safe return under treaty.

The end of the institution and not of the ideas — which by then were already moving east in Syriac and into Christendom under an apostle's borrowed name. Traditions survive by leaving.
